Description
Kpanlogo is a dance of the Ga fishermen of the Greater Accra region. A joyful, social dance whose contemporary form, which in the 1960s responded to the Beatles and pop music of the Western world, caused such a stir that dancers were arrested and drums confiscated by the police. Today, highlife based on the foundations of kpanlogo is the most popular music in West Africa.
The ensemble usually plays three kpanlogos, a male one, a female one, and a master drum, who moderates the entire dance. The atsempen bell, the frikyiwa castanets, the shekere, and the tamalin bass drum are also included.
