Description

The extra size and weight make the Kpanlogo XL Premium drums uncompromising instruments with no sonic limits. They offer an exceptionally rich and full sound, deep bass and crisp, clear highs. The sound is very consistent - the drums hold tuning very well.

This is the best that Ghana has to offer. The large dimensions of the drum (approx. 12”) are a “tax on sound” that ordinary instruments cannot offer. However, it is true that these drums are mainly used large ensembles and theaters where frequent moving of instruments is not necessary 🙂

"Traditional Ghanaian drumming is as straightforward as possible, so that it is understandable to the dancers and the spectators (who are always protected in the traditional context as participants in rituals and other social events). There is very little improvisation, and clearly defined parts are played. Not only to be easily portable, traditional instruments are smaller than modern ones. In this functional context, there is no need for a big sound. In recent decades, with new musical forms, we have only started to use large drums, with a greater range and a richer sound. In these new dances, which we would call 'neotraditional', there is already room for a certain individual expression of the drummers - solos, for which larger instruments are suitable."

At social events such as weddings, funerals, outdoor performances or festivals, players more often choose standard size drums (approx. 10”) for their compactness and easier handling.

We offer the Kpanloga in a perfectly matched pair. Drum covers are included in the package.

Kpanlogo dance

Originally a dance of the Ga fishermen of the Greater Accra region, Kpanlogo is a joyful, social dance whose modern form in the 1960s was a reaction to the Beatles and Western pop music. It caused such a stir at the time that dancers were arrested and drums confiscated by the police.

Today, highlife, based on the foundations of kpanloga, is the most popular music in West Africa.

In a traditional ensemble, three drums, the kpanlogo, are usually played – a male and a female voice, with the master drum leading and moderating the entire dance. The atsempen bell, the frikyiwa castanets, the shekere and the tamalin bass drum are also included.

This drum is handmade by legendary drummer and drum maker, Christopher “Kalipo” Ametefe. This is by no means a tourist souvenir, but a fully professional, functional and authentic instrument, used by top players right in Ghana.
